German Apple Sauce Streusel Cake
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 2 cups flour
- 14 tbsp. butter
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tbsp. vanilla sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp. bread crumbs
- 15 oz. apple sauce
For the streusel:
- 1 cup butter
- 2 cups flour
- ⅔ cups sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 pinch of salt
Instructions
Dough:
- Cut butter into ½-inch cubes.
- In a stand mixer knead flour, butter, sugar, vanilla sugar and egg to a smooth dough. Don´t over-knead.
- Grease a baking sheet and flour lightly.
- Roll out dough to fit the sheet.
- Sprinkle the dough with the bread crumbs.
- Spread apple sauce on top of the dough.
- Preheat Oven to 350F
Streusel:
- Cut the butter into ½-inch cubes.
- Add flour, sugar, butter cubes, cinnamon, and salt to a stand mixer bowl.
- Mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle evenly on top of the apple sauce.
- Bake at 350F for about 45 min. or until dough is done and streusel are golden brown.
Notes
Serving Tip: Serve with whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream.

I HAVE LOOKED FOR THIS RESIPE FOR OVER 20 YEARS .I THINK I HAVE FOUND IT I MADE UP MY DOUGH SPREAD IT IN A SHALLOW PAN AND PUT CRUSHED PINAPPLES ON THE DOUGH. IT WAS DELICIOUS

Hi Karen, best is to use plain bread crumbs. If you can´t find vanilla sugar in the shop, you can use 1/2 tbsp. of sugar plus a tsp. of vanilla extract.
