I've compiled a list of my top 12 schnitzel sauces for you, as well as a bonus tip at the bottom of this post in case you don't have much time to prepare a sauce.

Tip: All sauces can be prepared in advance and refrigerated for several days. You can also freeze all sauces.

Rahm Sauce - German Cream Sauce

Creamy rahm sauce in a glass serving dish with parsley.

The creamy rahm sauce is delicious with mashed potatoes, meatballs, or schnitzel, and it's easy to make at home. This tasty sauce can be prepared in a hurry and is absolutely perfect for a cozy family dinner.

The sauce is handy because it can be made from scratch with only a few ingredients and does not require a gravy base.

Jager Sauce - Authentic Jagerschnitzel Gravy

Jager schnitzel gravy in a white bowl on a plate.

Brown jager sauce is one of the most popular German gravies. The flavorful mushroom sauce is delicious and goes perfectly with schnitzels. It's no surprise that jager schnitzel is a famous food all over the world.

    German Mushroom Cream Sauce

Creamy German mushroom sauce in a white bowl on a white plate.

This German mushroom cream sauce is another popular schnitzel gravy. It is often served with the creamy jager schnitzel version and is an amazing side dish to the famous Bavarian bread dumplings.

This creamy mushroom sauce is incredibly tasty and quite addictive. Try it; I guarantee you'll fall in love with it.

Gypsy Sauce - Zesty Bell Pepper Sauce

    German gypsy schnitzel sauce.

This zesty bell pepper sauce is an amazing addition to schnitzel. Gypsy gravy is delicious with schnitzel. It goes well with grilled meats and seafood, which is why I also love using Zigeunersauce as a condiment at barbecues.

    German Mustard Sauce

German mustard sauce in a white sauce bowl.

This delicious homemade mustard sauce is ideal for when you want an easy, flavorful creamy sauce. The quick roux, infused with cream and seasoned with mustard and a few spices, comes together quickly.

Mustard sauce complements not only schnitzels, but also other meat dishes such as tender pork loin strips. I particularly enjoy mustard sauce with fish fillets. If you haven't tried Senfeier yet, you should. In Germany, this inexpensive egg in mustard sauce dish is very popular.

    Homemade Brown Gravy

Brown schnitzel gravy in a small serving bowl with a spoon.

For schnitzels, a simple brown gravy is always a good choice. It goes well with traditional German schnitzel sides like spatzle and dumplings.

I like to make a brown gravy base from scratch and freeze it in cubes. This way, I always have a rich, flavorful gravy base on hand to make homemade brown gravy from scratch in a hurry.

    Beer Gravy

German beer gravy in a small serving dish.

Instead of water or broth, use beer in your brown gravy. The beer adds a wonderful flavor to the gravy. I prefer dark Bavarian beer, but Guinness or stout beer can also be used.

    German Horseradish Sauce

German horseradish sauce for schnitzels in a small glass serving dish with dill.

This delicious horseradish sauce brings variety to the kitchen. Horseradish sauce is less popular, but still very tasty. The sauce can be prepared quickly with a few ingredients and also goes very well with schnitzels, other meat dishes and fish.

    Frankfurt Green Sauce

Frankfurt green herb sauce in a small glass bowl.

Grüne Soße, also known as "Grie Soß" in Hesse, is a traditional herb sauce from Frankfurt am Main that is still popular today. The herbs for this aromatic sauce can be difficult to find outside of Europe, but you can find substitutions in the recipe.

    Ketchup & German Curry Sauce

German curry sauce in a small glass.

In Germany, schnitzel is frequently served with ketchup. Not only do children enjoy this simple condiment with their "Schnitzel und Pommes" (schnitzel and french fries), but adults do as well.

Curry ketchup aka curry sauce is a more flavorful version of ketchup that is used in Germany not only for curry wurst but also for schnitzel and grilled meat. It is delicious served both warm and cold. When served cold, it is called curry ketchup, and when served warm, it is called curry sauce, but it is essentially the same sauce. The sauce is very simple to make from scratch and can be stored in the fridge for several weeks.

    German Onion Gravy

    Schnitzel with onion gravy.

One of my favorite schnitzel sauces is the delicious onion sauce. I like to make the sauce in larger batches because it freezes very well.

The gravy goes well with more than just pork breaded schnitzel. My favorite method is to bake unbreaded chicken tenderloins in a casserole pan with the onion sauce and shredded cheese on top. A fantastic quick dinner.

    Brown Butter

Brown butter in a little glass jar.

If you like it simple and you don´t have much time on hand. Simply serve the schnitzels with brown butter. The nutty flavor of the brown butter pairs beautifully with German side dishes like spatzle or potato dumplings.

    Lemon Juice & Cranberry Garnish

Schnitzel with French fries, lemon wedge and cranberry sauce.

Last but not least, in Germany, schnitzel is frequently served without gravy, along with French fries or potato salad. It is simply accompanied by lemon slices or wedges. You've probably seen this with Classic German schnitzel or Wiener Schnitzel. Simply squeeze the lemon juice over the schnitzel and enjoy.
