Schnitzel sandwiches are one of the most popular go-to snacks for lunch, dinner, or on the go in Germany. The popular schnitzel is served in a crispy German roll with pickles, lettuce, and tomato.

A Schnitzelbrötchen is a tasty snack that is also convenient to eat on the go and makes a fantastic summer meal outside. It can be enjoyed warm or cold; both are absolutely delicious.

If you are looking for the perfect bun for this sandwich try one of my favorite German roll recipes like the famous Kaiser rolls, buttermilk rye rolls or the soft and moist Sour Cream Rolls.

    Instructions

Follow these easy steps to learn how easy it is to make German pork schnitzel sandwiches.

Schnitzel Sandwich Step 1: marinating schnitzel with mustard and spices.

Rinse the schnitzels, and then use a paper towel to pat them dry.

Mix together the mustard, salt, pepper, and paprika powder in a small bowl.

Brush the marinade on both sides of the schnitzels.

Schnitzel Sandwich Step 2: breading station for schnitzel.

In a deep plate, put some flour and bread crumbs. Put the milk and egg in a third deep plate and whisk them together.

Sprinkle a little flour on the schnitzels and shake off the extra. Dip the pork schnitzel into the egg mixture, then the bread crumbs.

Schnitzel Sandwich Step 3: frying schnitzel in a pan.

Over medium-high heat, melt the lard and butter in a large pan.

Place in the pan and fry on each side until golden brown.

Schnitzel Sandwich Step 4: crispy German roll cut into two pieces with mustard and mayonnaise.

In the meantime, cut the rolls open and put your favorite condiments on each side.

Schnitzel Sandwich Step 5: placing lettuce and schnitzel on the roll.

Add a salad leaf to one side of the roll and put the schnitzel on it.

Schnitzel Sandwich Step 6: adding pickles and tomato slices on top of the schnitzel.

Top with tomato slice and pickles.

Hint: Add additional lard and butter to make sure that the schnitzel can nicely fry golden brown.

    Substitutions

    • Chicken - make this dish with chicken to enjoy a chicken schnitzel sandwich.
    • Beef or veal - you can also make a great schnitzel sandwich with breaded slices of beef or veal.
    • Vegetarian - bread a slice of tofu or halloumi cheese instead of a pork schnitzel to make this dish vegetarian.
Schnitzel Sandwich Step 6: adding pickles and tomato slices on top of the schnitzel.

    Schnitzel Sandwich Toppings

Change the flavor profile with these ideas:

    • Spicy - to spice up the sandwich, add some hot sauce, jalapenos, or banana peppers.
    • Bacon - crispy bacon slices elevate this dish to new heights.
    • Mushrooms & Onions - with the addition of fried mushrooms and onions, this pork schnitzel sandwich is reminiscent of the famous jagerschnitzel.
    • Schnitzel Sandwich Sauce - In Germany, remoulade is a popular sauce for schnitzel sandwiches.

    Equipment

To make this delicious beef goulash you don´t need to dirty a lot of dishes.

    • cutting board
    • cutting knife
    • 1 small bowl
    • spoon
    • fork
    • 3 deep plates
    • large pan

    Serving Ideas

Schnitzel sandwiches are typically served on their own. However, a German cucumber salad or cabbage salad is a delicious side dish.

    Storage

You can keep fried schnitzel for at least 3 days in the fridge. You can also freeze them. Allow to thaw at room temperature before crisping up in a frying pan or an air fryer for best results. I would not recommend reheating schnitzel in the microwave as they will turn dry and soggy.

    Top Tip

Serve the schnitzel sandwich with your favorite beer or a glass of sparkling Apfelschorle.
